A Functional Approach to Women’s Health
In regards to Women’s Health, we tend to look at the health of the Endocrine System. The endocrine system is what regulates hormone balance within the body, and between men and women, it’s us women that tend to have a tougher time with this balance.
When we first start working with female clients, we typically begin with some digestive support because one of the forgotten hormones in female health is insulin. If insulin and overall blood sugar management is not balanced, this can have a negative cascading effect on the rest of the endocrine system. So, before we can tackle cortisol, estrogen and progesterone balance, we need to make sure that elevated insulin is not driving force behind the rest of the hormone disruption. The best way for us to evaluate this is by identifying the markers in fasting blood work as well as observing symptoms of blood sugar in balance such as: needing to eat every couple of hours, craving sweets, get shaky or “hangry” if haven’t eaten, and overeating, just to name a few. Once blood sugar is balanced, we can then begin to achieve balance with some of the other hormones.
